The Guide for ChatGPT Plugins

ChatGPT’s plugin feature, still in Beta as of June 2023, is a game-changer. Designed for advanced functionality, these plugins allow ChatGPT to access real-time data, perform computations, and integrate with third-party service APIs. This guide cuts through the noise, providing a clear overview of how to harness these plugins effectively.

What are ChatGPT Plugins?

ChatGPT plugins are like mini-apps that you can add to your ChatGPT interface. They enable the AI to perform specific tasks that it couldn’t do on its own. For example, if you’re looking for flight information, a travel plugin can fetch real-time data for you. Want to translate a paragraph into another language? There’s a plugin for that too. Essentially, these plugins make ChatGPT more versatile and task-oriented. Source

How to Get Access to ChatGPT Plugins

Before diving into the steps to add plugins, let’s first discuss the requirements. To use ChatGPT plugins, you’ll need:

  1. A ChatGPT Account: You should have an active account with ChatGPT.
  2. A ChatGPT Plus subscription: Plugins are exclusive to ChatGPT Plus subscribers. The subscription offers additional benefits like priority access during peak times and faster response times. Learn more about ChatGPT Plus here.

How to Add Third-Party Plugins to ChatGPT

Now, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty – how do you actually add plugins to ChatGPT?

Step 1: Enable Plugins in your ChatGPT settings.

Once you’ve signed in to your account, navigate to your account settings located at the bottom left side of the page. On the Settings pop-up, click on the Beta features tab and tick the Plugins option on.

Profile > Settings > Beta features > Plugins

Step 2: Create a New Chat.

After you have enabled plugins, head back to your dashboard and create a new chat. To do this, simply click “+ New chat” at the top left corner.

Step 3: Hover over GPT-4 at the top of the chat and click on “Plugins”.

If you’re a new subscriber to ChatGPT Plus, you’ll notice that the New chat window has new options on top, GPT-3.5 and GPT-4. Hovering over GPT-4 will reveal a few options. Choose Plugins.

Step 4: Click on ‘No plugins enabled’, and then ‘Plugin Store’.

Once clicked, you’ll notice that it’ll say “No plugins enabled” just below the GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 options. Click on “No plugins enabled” and then Plugin Store.

Step 5: Browse through the Plugin Store and install your chosen plugins.

When you’re in the Plugin Store window, everything is all self-explanatory. You can go about browsing for plugins and clicking install on any that you like. Note that while OpenAI prioritizes safety when creating the ChatGPT plugin feature, it’s still recommended to install plugins from a trusted source. Make sure to do your own research about the third-party plugin creators before clicking install.

Step 6: Your plugins are automatically enabled upon installation.

Congratulations! You’ve now installed your ChatGPT plugin! All enabled plugins will show up where the “No plugins enabled” text used to be.

To disable plugins, simply click on the icon or drop-down arrow and deselect the plugin.

To uninstall a ChatGPT plugin, head over the to Plugin Store, find the plugin you wish to uninstall, and click Uninstall.

How to Use ChatGPT Plugins

The great things about ChatGPT’s plugins are that they automatically work as long as they’re enabled and if your written prompt’s topic relates to the plugin’s function.

If you have multiple plugins with the same or relatively the same function, ChatGPT will use only one (at random I assume). So if you want to use a specific plugin, make sure to disable others that have similar uses.
